The Story behind quibble market

Thrifting in Ipswich has never been more exciting With Quibble Market

As someone who has always loved hunting for preloved treasures at boot sales, garage sales, markets, or op shops, I knew our community needed a unique place to shop sustainably.

In this blog post, I’ll share how Quibble Market began, my journey from being a nurse to a thrifting entrepreneur, and how this market has grown into a beloved event in Ipswich. You’ll learn about the passion, vision, and dedication behind this thriving community marketplace.

What makes Quibble Market special, and how did it get its name?

The story behind the name and vision of Quibble Market is one of creativity and connection.

Peta Meek: My Journey

Thrifting has always brought joy and excitement into my life.

When I moved to Ipswich in 2022 after having my second child, I needed a change. The endless cycle of mum life with two energetic little ones was taking a toll on me. I craved something that was truly mine, a project that would bring happiness and fulfillment.

Why Quibble?

We wanted something unique. My partner Tom found “Quibble” as a synonym for “Haggle,” and it stuck! We love how cute and catchy it sounds.

The Inspiration Behind Quibble Market

Here are three key elements that sparked the creation of Quibble:

#1 - Finding My Joy in Thrifting

Thrifting has been my passion for as long as I can remember. Even before moving to Ipswich, I found joy in visiting markets and preloved clothing events. When I realised there wasn’t a market like that in Ipswich, it felt like a sign to start one.

I needed an outlet for my creativity, and building a community around something I love was the perfect opportunity.

Bringing people together through sustainable fashion and creating connections became my mission.

#2 - Building a Community for Preloved Lovers

Ipswich was missing a vibrant place for thrifting and community. Starting small, our first Quibble Market was at the South Ripley Community Centre. I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and enthusiasm.

With every market, the community grew stronger, and new friendships blossomed. The feeling of seeing people bond over thrifting is truly heartwarming.

Now, Quibble Market has become a space where locals come together to share their love for secondhand shopping.

#3 - The Evolution of Quibble Market

From a small community center to hosting events at the massive Ipswich Showgrounds, Quibble has grown exponentially. Eighteen months later, we also host markets at the Distillery Road Market in Eagleby, making Quibble a well-known name in the area.

I’ve met incredible people and made so many friends. Every month, the market brings joy to my heart and excitement to the community.

Haggling tips for items you LOVE!

  • Have a good opening line: Is this your best price ? or would you take $__
  • Be polite and watch your body language
  • Don’t let someone saying no discourage you, try another time
  • If you are buying multiple items from a seller.. this BOOSTS your bargaining power
  • The best time to haggle is towards the end of a market but do not let this stop you from haggling from the start.

Tips for stall holders selling

  • Use tags or stickers for your items (check out Officeworks or Spotlight)
  • Iron or steam your items
  • Make sure clothes are free of stains/in good condition
  • Be reasonable with pricing, would you buy what your selling for that price and quality of the item
  • You represent your stall/wardrobe, wear a favourite outfit on the day, this includes your favourite comfy outfit.
  • Do not overfill your rack, less is best and makes it easier to see and look through all the items on the rack.
  • Give shoppers space whilst shopping, I encourage stallholders not to hover shoppers but instead to blend in and pretend you are a shopper
  • Bring a friend along to do the stall with, that way you can chat and catch up and take turns at looking at other stalls
  • Decorate your stall, create an inviting and memorable space.
