3 Mindset Shifts That Keep Us (Mostly) Sane as Parents

By Samantha and Terry, Life Coaches From Cuppa Strange

Mindset shifts for parents

Parenting is like trying to keep a bunch of balloons in the air while someone hands you a baby, a laptop, and a grocery list. There are moments you crush it, and moments you wonder if cereal for dinner counts as parenting or survival. (Spoiler: it’s both.)

Samantha and I aren’t just life coaches—we’re also in the thick of parenting. We’ve learned a few mindset shifts for parents along the way that keep us sane(ish) and loving life with our kids, and we’re here to share the good stuff.

1. The Chaos is Inevitable, So Laugh at It

Some days, you’ve got your life together. Other days, you’re pulling a toy car out of your shoe five minutes before an important Zoom call. The magic isn’t in avoiding the chaos—it’s in laughing through it. Life feels way lighter when you can look at the mess and say, “Well, this will make a great story one day.”

2. Progress Over Perfection (Or: Did the Kids Eat? Success!)

We used to think being good parents meant following all the rules. But the truth is, nobody’s handing out medals for perfect parenting. If the kids are fed, clothed (most of the time), and know they’re loved, you’re doing just fine. Honestly, the best moments are the unexpected ones—like turning a burned dinner into a pizza night or making up goofy bedtime stories. It’s all about that mindset shift.

3. You Can’t Pour from an Empty Coffee Cup

We get it—self-care sounds like one of those things you’ll get to… eventually. But we’ve learned the hard way that we can’t show up as good parents or coaches if we’re running on fumes. Whether it’s sneaking off for a coffee date or locking yourself in the bathroom for five minutes of peace (no judgment), take that time. You’ll thank yourself—and so will your kids.

It’s All About That Parenting Mindset Shift

We don’t have it all figured out (who does?), but we’ve learned that mindset is everything. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being present, having fun, and learning to love the journey. What’s your favorite parenting mindset hack? Share with us in the comments—we’d love to hear your stories!
