Surviving Long Car Trips with Kids

Surviving Long car Trips With Kids

Anyone else feel the sense of dread when it’s time to embark on a long road trip with kids? The destination promises fun, but the journey can feel like a marathon—if we make it in one piece and keep our sanity intact.

Australia is huge, and that means our road trips can be epic (and sometimes exhausting). With a long drive ahead, we’ve come up with a few tried-and-true tips for surviving the road with a toddler in tow:

1. Pack Snacks Like a Pro

Before I became a parent, I swore I’d never let my kids eat in the car. Well, that went out the window! On a long car trip, it’s a lifesaver. I recommend packing a fun bento box filled with bite-sized snacks your little ones will love. Why not create a smorgasbord of treats? It’ll keep them busy and happy!

2. Keep Car Games Handy

“I Spy” is a classic, but there are so many more games to keep little minds engaged. Try the alphabet game (spotting objects in alphabetical order), or create a car scavenger hunt where they look for things like red cars, cows, or stop signs. Simple games can make time fly!

3. Sing Your Heart Out

Music can save the day. While every family’s tastes differ, I suggest tapping into your kids’ favourites. Is your toddler obsessed with Miss Moni? Turn it up and sing along. If they’re into the latest TikTok trends, join in with the dance moves! Letting your kids pick the playlist can make the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

4. Stock Up on Car Toys

We’ve all tried the busy boards you can buy online, and let’s be honest—my kid loses interest in about two minutes. Instead, opt for colouring books, sticker sets, and fidget toys. These are great for open-ended play and can keep little hands busy for longer stretches.

5. Start Early, Take It Slow

There’s no rush. Leave early and plan for regular stops at interesting places along the way. Stretch your legs, explore a new spot, and embrace the journey as quality family time. The destination will still be there, so why not enjoy the ride?

At the end of the day, long car trips with kids will never be a breeze, but with a bit of preparation, you can make some great memories along the way!
