A Visit to the Ipswich Children’s Library

A visit to the Ipswich Children’s Library

As a teacher librarian and parent, I love bringing my toddler to the Ipswich Children’s Library. From the moment you walk in, a giant, magical tree greets you, setting the stage for an exciting adventure. This tree is just the beginning of the fun!

A Library Just for Kids

The Ipswich Children’s Library is Australia’s only public library designed just for children. Located in the Nicholas Street Precinct, it’s a space where kids aged 0–12 can explore, learn, and play. With over 35,000 books just for children, there’s something for every young reader. The library also has a dyslexia-friendly collection, so all children can enjoy reading, along with a special section for parents.

Fun and Interactive Learning

The library is packed with hands-on, fun activities that kids love! One of the highlights is the drawing activity, where children can colour in a fish, scan it, and watch it swim onto the giant “fish tank” screen. It’s always exciting to see your own creation come to life!

There’s also a set of winding tubes that whisk silk scarves through the air, sending them swirling and fluttering back down in a fun and surprising way. And for those who love games, there’s a giant touchscreen where kids can play interactive, educational games. Alongside these, the library offers puzzles, blocks, and some craft activities, so there’s always something new to try.

Family-Friendly Facilities

The Ipswich Children’s Library is a welcoming space for families. With free Wi-Fi, kids’ magazines, DVDs, and self-service kiosks, it’s easy to spend a whole afternoon here. There’s also a parents’ room and wheelchair access, making the library accessible for everyone.

Open On Weekends

One of the best features of the Ipswich Children’s Library is that it’s open on weekends. Families can enjoy this amazing space on both Saturday and Sunday, making it the perfect place for a weekend outing. With its welcoming hours—from 9 AM to 2 PM on both days—it’s easy to fit a visit into your schedule.
