What I Packed in My Ipswich Hospital Birth Bag

Images of expectant parents carefully organizing and packing essential items for their hospital bag, including clothing, baby supplies, toiletries, and comfort items, ensuring they’re well-prepared for the birth experience at Ipswich Hospital.

I loved my experience at the Ipswich Hospital for my birth. I’m definitely one of those “way over-prepared” types who had to have everything covered. Did I pack too much? Absolutely. But here’s a list of what I actually found useful—and what I’d suggest packing if you’re gearing up for your own hospital stay. This list was created with input from other Ipswich mums and me, and we’d love to keep adding to it—so let us know if we missed anything!

Clothing for Mum

  • Comfortable button-down pajamas – Ideal for easy access when nursing or for general comfort.
  • Dressing gown – Keeps you cozy and covers up for walks around the ward.
  • Oversized tees and loose pants – Go for maximum comfort.
  • Socks – Hospitals can be chilly, and cozy feet are a must.
  • Slip-on shoes – Great for moving around easily without bending over.
  • Slippers – Adds a little more comfort.
  • Swimwear/bikini – If you plan to use the bath.
  • Nursing bras – Soft, comfy, and supportive for breastfeeding.
  • Thongs – Shower-friendly footwear.

Clothing For Baby

  • Going home outfits – One in 000 and one in 0000 size, just in case.
  • Singlets (000 & 0000) – Perfect layering pieces.
  • Onesies with zips (000 & 0000) – Easy to put on and take off; zips save time!
  • Some 00000 clothing – Just in case your little one arrives on the smaller side. .
  • Beanie – Newborns lose heat quickly, so a little hat helps keep them warm.
  • Socks and mittens – Keeps tiny hands and feet warm.
  • Swaddles – Pack a mix of regular and warmer ones.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Fairy lights – For a calming, soft light in your room.

Important Tips:

  • Check with your midwife about hospital-provided items like formula and bottles if you’re formula-feeding.
  • Pack lighter initially and consider keeping a secondary bag at home with extra clothes and essentials. You can have someone bring it if you need it later.
This list is a result of lots of trial and error—learning what was useful and what was a bit extra. I hope it helps you feel ready, relaxed, and prepared for your own hospital stay. Happy packing!
